On 15 January 2022, the Tongan volcano generally known as Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha’apai (hereafter, Hunga Tonga) erupted explosively, sending a plume of ash as excessive as 55 kilometres into the environment and inflicting sonic booms that had been heard as distant as Alaska. The eruption triggered the primary world volcanic tsunami because the Indonesian volcano Krakatau created lethal waves in 1883 — making Hunga Tonga the primary eruption of its form within the fashionable satellite tv for pc period. Writing in Nature, Wright et al.1, Lynett et al.2 and Omira et al.3 have seized this chance to review the exceptional wave phenomena that the eruption triggered, utilizing a spread of space- and Earth-based observational strategies.
